Rainbow Basin Natural Area (BLM) is 8 miles north of Barstow off Irwin Rd. via Fossil Bed Rd.: multicolored canyon walls, the Barstow Syncline fold, and a fossil record that includes camels, three-toed horses, saber-tooth cats and mastodons. Drive the one-way Fossil Canyon Loop (high clearance recommended; no RVs/trailers). Owl Canyon Campground is first come, first served. Leave any fossils in place and tell BLM Barstow (760-252-6000). Bring water.
