Afton Canyon Natural Area (BLM), off the I-15 Afton Rd. exit east of Barstow, is one of the few places the Mojave River flows above ground year-round. Hike the canyon and washes, watch for birds + wildlife, spot freight trains, and camp at the small first-come, first-served BLM campground. Bring your own water; some roads need high clearance; watch for flash floods; cell service is spotty.
